Thanks to private donors, the Kawartha Lakes Food Source (KLFS) is excited to announce the launch of the Family Cooking Project as a permanent full-time program of their organization.

Each eight-week session of the Family Cooking Project provides ten local families with recipes, non-perishables, fresh ingredients and the one-on-one support they need in order to produce three healthy and delicious meals a week. Clients will also receive, free of charge, the kitchen equipment that is required to prepare all recipes.

These recipes include “mighty minestrone” soup, muffin tin lasagna, kidney bean brownies and stove top shepherd’s pie.

The goal of the Family Cooking Project is to help families make better use of simple ingredients, learn new recipes, stretch their grocery money, improve health and increase family time while also building confidence and the skills of all family members in the kitchen.

This Family Cooking Project was successfully piloted by KLFS in 2019. Feedback from the previous pilot was overwhelmingly positive. Families expressed excitement to receive their weekly grocery bags and trying new recipes was a source of joy. A participant of the pilot project shared that their “son really enjoys the program so far and is already showing a love for cooking!”

The Family Cooking Project will launch in Woodville the Tuesday after the Family Day long weekend and will move on to other rural communities of Kawartha Lakes throughout the remainder of the year.

Executive Director, Heather Kirby, says her hope for the program is that the “joy of simple, healthy meals will help participating families be more resilient”. Kirby also offers her gratitude to the Haliburton-Kawartha-Pine Ridge District Health Unit for supporting KLFS with the project by providing the nutritious and delicious recipes.
