Dunsford: KLFS Featured Food Bank

Above all, the Dunsford Community Food Bank is centred around family and community.

Founded almost 20 years ago, community member Anna Thurston saw a need for a food bank in the Dunsford area. With support from two local churches, the Dunsford Community Food Bank was founded. Fay Carslake, the food bank’s current Chair says that Anna’s legacy and emphasis on serving community motivates her every day.

Located in the basement of the Dunsford United Church, the food bank currently serves roughly 60 individuals each month, providing hygiene products and pre-packed food hampers based on each client’s preferences. In addition, the food bank offers emergency pick-ups and a ‘get-started’ package for new clients. “We’re here day or night. You will have food if you give us a call,” explains Fay.

In the past year, the organization has received massive support from the local community. Over the December holidays the Kawartha Charity Riders provided food and toys to each of the client families. “Being a mom of three and seeing how many families we help here is pretty big,” says Barb Carslake, the food bank’s treasurer.

The foodbank is open the first Wednesday of each month from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The food bank can be contacted by calling (705) 341-3699, or emailing faycarslake@hotmail.com. Pick-ups take place l at 1981 Sturgeon Road Dunsford, Ontario, and delivery is available to anyone without access to reliable transportation.
