We’re always grateful when community members get involved at KLFS by organizing a fundraiser or food drive to support our mission to end hunger in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Teaming up with friends, family, teammates, or colleagues in effort to collect food or monetary donations can make an incredible impact at KLFS.
Here are some ideas our supporters have used to create fun and successful fundraisers:
CLASSES & WORKSHOPS
In a paint class, workshop, or workout class, for example, you can share a skill or hobby where registration is a monetary or non-perishable food donation!KINDNESS BINGO
Encourage participants to gather all the food items on a bingo card - first one to collect them all, wins!FRIENDLY COMPETITIONS
Team up with colleagues and challenge another local business or organization to a competition: whoever raises the most money or collects the most food, wins!PARTIES & CELEBRATIONS
Ask for food donations as an alternative to gifts when celebrating an occasion or having a staff party! Why give in this way?
Organizing your own event is a fun, engaging, and fulfilling way to give back to those that are most vulnerable in our community. You can take pride knowing you’re making a difference while building stronger connections with neighbours and other community members that contribute to your cause and share a common goal of feeding our hungry. Community-led events are a great way to inspire change and raise awareness about KLFS as an organization and a resource, which means we can reach more potential families and individuals struggling with food insecurity. You may not know which of your neighbours is experiencing food insecurity, but for them, your decision to host an event could be the difference between having school lunches in the fridge or not. KLFS is always here to answer your questions, listen to your fundraising ideas, or help you spread the word about your upcoming event!

Payroll Giving is a type of charitable contribution that allows you to donate a percentage of each pay cheque from your employer to Kawartha Lakes Food Source.
Why give in this way?
Payroll deductions have significant tax advantages and can be an excellent way to spread out your charitable giving throughout the year. Once the setup is complete, payroll giving is pre-scheduled and effortless, making finances easy to manage.NEXT STEPS:
Setting up a charitable deduction can be arranged with your payroll department:Ask human resources if your company offers payroll giving options.
A written agreement giving the payroll department permission to withhold the donation amount is kept on record by the payroll department.
The payroll department sets up an account called an employee-charity trust. In this account, the withheld contributions are deposited with each payroll.
The payroll department then remits the amount held in trust to Kawartha Lakes Food Source and you receive a charitable tax receipt quarterly or annually.

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a personal giving account established at a public charity, or sponsoring organization, to support the charitable organizations you care about. Funds and assets are donated to the DAF where they are invested and managed by the sponsoring organization. Charities of your choosing can receive funds from the DAF at any time following your recommendations.
Why give in this way?
LOW-COST & ADMINISTRATIVE EASE
DAFs are low-cost and require little administrative management from the donor: you choose the sponsoring organization, the deposit amount or asset, and the terms of your initial investment, while the sponsoring organization handles everything else.TAX OPTIMIZATION
When you give to a DAF, the sponsoring organization will issue a tax receipt, ensuring you immediately benefit from the tax relief gained after making a donation. At any point in your lifetime, you can choose how much of your investment you would like to contribute to KLFS.CAPITAL GAINS EXEMPTIONS
You can also donate non-cash assets to a DAF instead of selling them in order to eliminate capital gains taxes, which could result in up to 27% tax savings.IMPACT
Assets deposited into a DAF are invested so they can grow tax-free over time. For many donors, a DAF is a vessel for making donations over a lifetime, which also provides more time for the donor to identify and support charities they care about.NEXT STEPS:
Speak to your investment manager, lawyer, or financial advisor to set up and contribute any one of the following items to a DAF account:
Publicly traded securities
Real estate
Private Business Interests
CashWith your tax advisor, decide how you will invest your contributions so that they can grow tax-free in your DAF account.
Recommend to your sponsoring organization that Kawartha Lakes Food Source and any other charities of your choosing be the recipients of your DAF funds.
Recommend which charities to continue supporting after your lifetime.

There are 3 ways to donate life insurance: take out a new policy in the name of a charitable organization, name the charity as the beneficiary of an existing policy, or transfer ownership of an existing policy to the charity. You or your estate will be rewarded for your donation through the charitable tax receipts you receive.
Take out a new policy in the name of the charitable organization. You’ll receive a charitable tax receipt for the cash value of the policy and for any premiums you pay.
Name the charity as the beneficiary of an existing policy if you already have one that your family no longer needs for financial stability. At the time of your death, the charity will receive the policy proceeds and your estate will receive the tax benefits.
Transfer ownership of an existing policy to the charity and receive a charitable tax receipt for the cash value of the policy. If you owe annual premiums on the policy, you’ll still pay them, but you’ll receive tax receipts in the amount of your payments.
Why give in this way?
TAX SAVINGS
Donating a life insurance policy isn’t subject to taxes, probate costs or estate debts. You can also make a substantial contribution through relatively small monthly or yearly payments. Along with tax savings, the benefit of donating a life insurance policy includes the freedom to choose what type of policy and how much premium you pay. Your gift can’t be legally challenged because life insurance is considered separate from your other estate assets.LONG-TERM LEGACY
When you contribute to Kawartha Lakes Food Source by donating life insurance, you will have long-term influence on the sustainability of the organization, even beyond your lifetime. You and your family can take pride in your lasting impact.NEXT STEPS:
Connect with a financial advisor to discuss your options for donating a life insurance policy. -
Donate a portion of your estate by leaving a gift for KLFS in your will once your needs and those of your loved ones have been met.
Why give in this way?
PLANNING WITH INTENTION & EASE
Save your family from paying taxes on high-value assets when you choose to donate them at the end of your life, eliminating financial stress and an administrative burden.HELPS WITH FAMILY FINANCIALS
When you designate a gift in your will that is higher than your net income in the year of death, your executor can claim a credit for the cash amount of your previous year’s income, providing material benefits to your family.NEXT STEPS:
Seek assistance from a trusted lawyer to have the proper documentation arranged. If you already have a will and an idea of what you would like to leave as a charitable donation, it can take as little as a few minutes to add the proper terms.
TAX EFFECTIVE TIP!
Transfer donation credits to your spouse or common-law partner! The donation tax credit is a non-refundable tax credit, which means other tax credits must get claimed first to bring your tax payable to zero. If you cannot claim your donation amount on your tax return, pool your donations with your partners’ for a larger tax credit on their tax return.
-
If you’re holding publicly traded securities (such as stocks) which have appreciated in value in your non-registered account, consider donating them ‘in-kind’ to a charity.
Why give in this way?
CAPITAL GAINS ELIMINATION
In return, you’ll get a tax receipt equal to the fair market value of the securities donated, and you will not be taxed on the capital gains accrued on those securities as you would if you sold the securities during your lifetime.NEXT STEPS:
Go to Canadahelps.org/donate/donate-securities and fill out the required fields.
Send the completed Letter of Direction to your broker authorizing the transfer of your shares to CanadaHelps.
CanadaHelps will sell the assets and send you a confirmation email with a charitable tax receipt.
Proceeds are then distributed to the charities you selected.
TAX-EFFECTIVE TIP!
Canadians who donate securities or mutual funds in-kind qualify for the elimination of the capital gains tax, saving up to 27% in tax credits. -
