This may be the most unique way to support our community!

Kawartha Lakes Food Source is the source of food for our nine-member food banks and 21 schools in the City of Kawartha Lakes. We thought that using a delicacy as the focus of our newest fundraiser would be fantastic!

The “Stinky Fish Challenge” is a way that you can support KLFS by donating to one of our three challengers so they do NOT have to sample this fine delicacy! The challenger with the least fundraising will have to sample the “stinky fish.”

Click on the challenger you would like to support and donate an amount of your choice. You can show your support by donating strategically for, or against, a challenger! You can also donate by cash, cheque or debit in person at our office: 41 George Street West, Lindsay, Monday – Friday from 8:30 – 4:30.

The Challengers Are:

Dave & Julie

BOB-FM’s Dave and Julie are participating in the World’s Stinkiest Fish Challenge out of a deep desire to help in their community.  It’s a tough time for many, and Dave and Julie will do just about anything they can to help those in need through the fundraising efforts of Kawartha Lakes Food Source. PLUS, they really want to do what they can to see Mike or Mark eat that disgusting thing!  Please help them in their efforts to avoid that stinky fish, and to help Kawartha Lakes Food Source!

Having access to adequate food and proper nutrition is essential for every person in our community. The Kawartha Lakes Food Source plays a vital role in helping us achieve this mission. Although I don’t relish the thought of sampling the “stinky fish”, I think it is important to support the Food Source and bring awareness to the problem of hunger in Kawartha Lakes communities. I am pleased to play my small part.”

A Little Bit Of History

For the foodies out there, what is this “stinky fish”? The Baltic herring, known as strömming in Swedish, is found in the North Sea. It is fermented for 6 months with just enough salt to keep it from rotting. The oldest archeological findings of fermented fish are 9,200 years old and found in the south portions of Sweden.

We would like to give a huge shout out to our challengers! Dave Illman and Julie Corlett from BOB FM are a team; Mike Perry from the Kawartha Family Health Team and past president of the Lindsay and District Chamber of Commerce, and last but not least our brand new Kawartha Lakes Police Chief Mark Mitchell!

“We can all fall on hard times. There are people in our community who go hungry; many of whom are children or working a job. None of us should to go hungry in Kawartha Lakes. Until we fix this, I am proud to be helping the excellent work of KLFS to help our friends and neighbours.” says Mike Perry about why he agreed to be a challenger, “It’s just fish. How bad can it be?”

Chief Mitchell has supported KLFS in the past by being part of the “Men in the Tent” event a few years ago. This year he has committed to support the KLFS by taking part in this event. Mark feels that while it may be a fun challenge, fighting poverty and food insecurity is a very serious community effort: “I think it is important to support the Food Source and bring awareness to the problem of hunger in Kawartha Lakes communities. I am pleased to play my small part”.

As for Dave and Julie, we all know that they could not pass up this stinky chance to get involved and support their community! “We are participating in the Stinky Fish Challenge out of a deep desire to help in our community. It’s a tough time for many, and we will do just about anything we can to help those in need through the fundraising efforts of Kawartha Lakes Food Source. PLUS, we really want to do what we can to see Mike or Mark eat that disgusting thing!”

These four brave citizens have agreed to support KLFS and will be seeking donations so that they do NOT have to sample the stinky fish! The one with the most donations wins…and the loser, the one with the least amount of donations, will have to sample.

Kawartha Lakes Food Source would like to thank BOB FM for being our marquee media sponsor.

Have fun donating & supporting our challengers and the Food Source.  Thank You.
