New Open Garden

Open Garden, what’s that?

The concept of an Open Garden is very similar to that of a Community Garden except it is open to all and is free of charge. The idea is that the garden is cared for by the community and the harvest is shared with anyone in need.

Our hope for the Open Garden is to help improve the food security of the Lindsay area, giving another place for people to get food when they are hungry and when food banks might not be open. The Open Garden is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day; something a food bank simply cannot do. We also hope to make healthy and nutritious food available to all and to provide information on where food comes from.

Kawartha Lakes Food Source was awarded a grant by the Feeding Fresh! Sysco Community Garden Program, a partnership grant between Sysco and the Ontario Association of Food Banks, which was used to create the Open Garden. Our new Open Garden is located behind the Alternative Education and Training Centre at 230 Angeline St S Lindsay ON.

With help from KLFS volunteers and students from the Green Industries class from the Alt Ed the Open Garden was born. It consists of 8 raised garden beds filled with beans, onions, beets, jalapenos, sweet peppers, tomatoes, baby lettuce, and kale for the 2017 season.

During the harvest anyone in need is welcome to pick any of the ripe vegetables. Vegetable type is indicated by painted signs in front of each row of plants. There are also signs indicating whether or not the vegetable is growing or ready to pick.

Starting Wednesday July 12, we will be meeting in the Garden every week from 5-7 for Weedy Wednesday until early September. Feel free to join us to help care for the garden; for more information please email Rachel at or call us at 705-324-0707
